Get the height right
A desk that's the wrong height leads to slouching and tired arms. When your child sits, their feet should rest flat on the floor, knees at about 90 degrees, and elbows level with the desktop. If their feet dangle, add a footrest; if they're hunched, the desk is too low.
Choose a supportive chair
Pair the desk with a chair that supports the lower back and suits your child's size. An adjustable chair is a smart buy — it grows with them and keeps the posture right across the years.
Allow enough surface space
Kids need room for a book, a notebook, and increasingly a tablet or laptop, all at once. A cramped desk means clutter and distraction. Pick a surface deep enough to keep a screen at a comfortable arm's length.
Light it well
Good lighting reduces eye strain. Position the desk near natural light where possible, and add a task lamp for evenings — placed on the opposite side to your child's writing hand, so it doesn't cast a shadow over their work.
Build in storage
Drawers or shelves within reach keep stationery and books organised, so study time isn't spent hunting for things. A tidy desk genuinely helps focus.
Keep it their own
A desk a child likes is a desk they'll use. Let them have a small say in the look — it builds a sense of ownership over their study space.
